Balance, Medications, Water & Shoes - Clutter

Balance - There are many simple exercises for improving your balance. Try standing on one foot while you’re in the bathroom brushing your teeth.  Count to 10. Switch feet and do it again. Pretty soon it will be easier.

Medications – Make sure whenever you see the doctor you take a complete list of your medications – including any over the counter drugs and supplements. If you see multiple doctors and they each write you different prescriptions – make sure that each one knows ALL the drugs you are taking! Drug interactions can cause you to be dizzy and fall.

Water – Drink enough water.  Coffee, tea and sodas don’t count!  When you get dehydrated – you are likely to get dizzy – dizziness leads to falling! Drink lots of water – especially during the summer -- 8 glasses a day!

Shoes – Having shoes that fit properly, are secure on your feet and allow you to feel the ground or floor beneath your feet – is very important. Slippers, flip-flops and other shoes that can easily come off your feet, are a fall hazard.

Clutter – Look around your house and your room. Clutter is the cause of many falls: Remove stacks of magazines on the floor, pet toys, electrical and phone cords that may trip you, anything you have to walk around. Have someone else take a look for you and make suggestions.
