Nom Group Job Task Analysis Course
More Information and Download

If you need to do a job or task analysis for the purpose of designing and developing technical training and are wondering where to start, this course is the one for you.

The link to download the course is at the bottom of the screen. Please read the contents of this screen. Payment for the course is non refundable.

The Nominal Group Job and Task Analysis course prepares the user to conduct a Job and Task Analysis with focus on using a nominal group of subject matter experts to do so.  The basic, accepted facts upon which the techniques in this course are based include the following:

  • Expert workers are better able to describe/define their job than anyone else.

  • All jobs can be effectively and sufficiently described in terms of the tasks that successful workers perform in that job.

  • All tasks have direct implications for the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that workers must have in order to perform the tasks correctly.

The course includes a Job Aid that can be printed and used during and after the course.

The information gathered when using the techniques taught in this course can be entered into the Task Analysis Toolkit.   (I designed both the course and the toolkit and the two go together like a hand in a glove.) The Task Analysis Toolkit can then be used to generate Task Analysis Reports for review and revision, or structured OJT Trainee and Trainer guides.  Since the output of a task analysis usually becomes the input for course design documents, the Task Analysis Toolkit allows objectives to be derived from tasks and allows instructional and strategies to be developed and documented for each task.

For more about the Task Analysis Toolkit, see its description elsewhere on this site.

In the course context, the term "Job Analysis" means the process by which the Tasks associated with a particular job are defined. A Task Analysis, on the other hand, is an analysis of the tasks to determine such things as Conditions, Standards, Frequency, Difficulty, and more.

While there are numerous methods to conduct both a job analysis and a task analysis, probably the most accurate and efficient way to do both is with a group of qualified experts meeting in a workshop setting and using the methods addressed in the course.

The course is a computer based course that normally takes approximately two hours to complete.

There are eight lessons in the course. The lessons and their descriptions are:

Lesson 1 - Nominal Group Job Task Analysis

This Lesson introduces the concept of using a nominal group workshop approach to Job and Task analysis and provides an overview of the process. The lesson also defines terms that are critical to the process.

Lesson 2 - Final Report and Room Layout

This lesson jumps ahead to discuss the final output, or report, resulting from the workshop to lay the framework for the remainder of the course. Because of the nature of the workshop, there are special room requirements that are also addressed in this lesson. .

Lesson 3 - Workshop Steps 1, 2, and 3

There are eight steps in the Nominal Group Job Task Analysis process and this lesson addresses the first three steps. The first three steps are:

     1. Team Orientation

     2. Review Job Description, and

     3. Create Initial Task List.

The lesson addresses each step in detail, providing not only instructions on what to do but also on how to do it.

Lesson 4 - Workshop Steps 4, 5, and 6

This lesson continues from Lesson 3 and addresses the next three steps of the process:

     4. Identify and Sequence Duties

     5. Identify Tasks

     6. Sequence Tasks (in order of training sequence).

Lesson 5 - Workshop Steps 7 and 8

This lesson continues from Lesson 4 and addresses the last two steps of the process.

Step 7 collects the following information for each task defined in Step 5: Frequency, Difficulty (to learn), Probability of Performance Failure in the Absence of Training, and Consequence of Failure.

Step 8 defines Standards of Performance, Conditions, Steps, Safety Issues, and all other information having an influence on training.

Lesson 6 - Workshop Coordination

This lesson addresses the coordination activities associated with a nominal group task analysis workshop. This includes a detailed schedule and checklist in both the course and the course job aid. The course also includes samples of various letters that might need to be sent as a part of the coordination function.

Lesson 7 - Facilitation Skills

This lesson addresses the facilitation skills required for a successful workshop as well as tips for the facilitator.

There are three specific roles connected with the workshop: Facilitator, Co-facilitator, and Coordinator. The roles will require a minimum of two people. (The Coordinator can also serve as either the Facilitator or Co-facilitator.) It is our recommendation that each person working with the workshop complete the course.

Lesson 8 - But I Don't Have a Group!!!

This lesson addresses addresses how to use the process under less than ideal conditions.  It's a lesson on how to make do when there is little to do with!

Cost: $49.00 U. S. Payment can be made by credit card through Pay Pal.

The course requires W98 or above to run.

The course uses a Challenge - Response security process that limits its use to a single PC. After you download, install, and start the course, it will issue you a randomly generated, six-digit Challenge code which you must write down for future reference. The course will then open your browser (Internet Explorer or NetScape) and link to a secure Pay Pal web site to complete the credit card transaction.

On the Pay Pal Screen, you must enter the Challenge Code as well as your credit card information.

After the credit card has been processed, you will be branched to another screen where you can create an email, once again enter your Challenge Code, and then send the email to me. You should receive your Response Code by return email or phone within 48 hours.

Upon closing the browser, you will return to the course where you can sign off until you receive the Response Code.

Click here to download the Course. Download the file (2.2 megs) to your desktop and then run it to install the course and put icon links to it in your program list and also on your desktop.
